House Rules

  • The Clubhouse is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Club is closed for major holidays and summer Mondays beginning the third Monday in June through August, and for two weeks in August for maintenance and repairs. Closings will be announced in the monthly Newsletter and by e-mail. If the Clubhouse needs to close unexpectedly, due to an emergency such as inclement weather, notification will be by recorded message on the Club’s telephone answering machine and by email.

  • Appropriate dress is required in the Clubhouse at all times. members, guests and visitors are expected to respect the dress code, and Members should advise their guests of the Club’s dress code before they visit the Club.

    Appropriate clothing for ladies shall include suits, dresses, skirts, tailored slacks, blouses and sweaters. Gentlemen must wear jackets with collared shirts or turtlenecks.

    The following clothing is strictly prohibited in the Clubhouse: jeans and denim apparel of any color, including designer denims; casual cargo pants; shorts, t-shirts and bare-midriff tops; workout or warm-up suits, beachwear, sneakers, and other athletic shoes.

    Modifications to the dress code may be made in certain specific instances or for certain programs or events, and Members will be advised beforehand.

    During the Health and Wellness Fitness Activities, such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Functional Fitness, etc. a modification of the dress code is enacted to allow sneakers and workout clothes in the Club for that period of the day members are enjoying the sessions and lunch afterward.

    The Board of Directors or the General Manager may determine on a case-by-case basis what is, or is not, appropriate attire, and may deny entry to the Club of any Member, Guest or Visitor not conforming to the dress code.

  • Smoking is prohibited everywhere indoors or under any awning or tent on Garret Club property, in compliance with New York State Smoking Laws.

  • Reservations, which may be made by telephone, email, or on the Club website, are requested for all daily luncheons and Club sponsored events. The Club offers a buffet luncheon Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with seating times at 12:00 noon, 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm. Bistro Nights are on Thursday and Friday evenings starting at 5:30 pm with seating every half-hour until 7:30 pm on Thursday and 8:00 pm on Friday unless there is another evening event that evening. Reservations are requested one day in advance or as early as possible on the same day.

    For other Club sponsored events, reservations should be made at least one day in advance and sooner for larger, more popular events. The Club reserves the right to charge for late cancellations.

  • Several rooms including the library, member office, red room and garret are available for private business meetings, served luncheons, social gatherings or bridge groups. Please contact the Office to make a reservation.

  • The Clubhouse is available for wedding receptions, private cocktail parties, dinner parties, breakfasts, luncheons and business meetings. Members may arrange other private functions at the Club or may sponsor a private function at the Club, provided the private function conforms to the Club’s Bylaws and the House Rules as indicated in this document. All such arrangements must be made through the General Manager who will determine the minimum and maximum numbers the Club will accommodate, and the reservation and cancellation policies which will apply to that specific function. The Member who arranges or sponsors a private function at the Club will be responsible for all expenses relating to that private event.  Individuals who are not members must have a member sponsor.

    No political candidate may address any gathering at the Club while he or she is a candidate for office. No reception or private party specific to or in support of the candidacy is permitted.

    The Club may be used by nonprofit organizations for their events, which may include fund-raising, with the approval of the Board.  

  • The use of cell phones or other personal electronic devices is strictly prohibited in the Club’s public spaces. PDAs may be used when necessary at meetings. Please turn off or set such devices to vibrate mode when entering the Club. If it is necessary to use a PDA, please confine usage to the Ladies’ Lounge on the ground floor, the Library if unoccupied, the second floor Member Office or the Bride’s Suite.

  • Members will be billed when a reservation for any Club sponsored event is made. To avoid full charges, if the Member does not attend and fails to notify the Club Office, the cancellation policy shall be:

    Club sponsored events and special luncheons: 24 hours notice is required.

    December Holiday Dinner Dance and Lobster Dinners: 48 hours notice is required.

    Reservations and cancellations may be left on the Club’s telephone answering machine or sent by email. However, the notice period for cancellations for any event other than the daily luncheon buffet shall not include Saturdays and Sundays or when the Club is closed.

  • The Garret Club Member Directory is for members’ use only and is not to be shared with non-members. The Member Directory is published solely for the social convenience of the members. The Member Directory may not be used for any other purpose including but not limited to: commercial, charitable, political, promotional, or marketing/sales.

    No Member shall pass out the Club access code to anyone other than another Member.

    The Club may not be used for an event which is open to the general public.  

    Members shall not use the Club, the Club’s facsimile machine, the Club stationery or the name of the Club in any way for commercial, political, or charitable purposes. A Member may not use the Club’s address and telephone number as her residential or legal mailing address.

    Members are forbidden to give any information regarding the Club to a newspaper, periodical or publication, or to publicize the Club and its Members. Reporters are not permitted in the Club unless involved in a Club event. Photographers are allowed only when permission has been requested and granted beforehand by either the General Manager or the Board of Directors.

  • The Club management reserves the right to seek medical attention for any Member or Guest perceived to be in need of medical care. Any Member, Guest or Visitor using Club facilities does so at their own risk.

  • The Club is not responsible for the loss of, or damage to, property, including jewelry, clothing, laptops and other electronic devices, or valuables of any kind, left or kept in the Clubhouse, whether such loss or damage is caused by the negligence of the Club, its Board of Directors, agents, employees or Members and Guests.

    The Club is not responsible for the loss of, or damage to automobiles or other vehicles, and their contents, parked in the Club’s private parking lot.

    Use of the Club’s parking lot and valet parking service, when available, is strictly at the risk of the vehicle’s owner.

  • The value of any Club property broken or damaged, or the cost of repair or cleaning to such property will be charged to the Member responsible. If damage is incurred during a private function or a Guest of a Member damages Club property, the Member or sponsoring Member will be held liable.

  • The supervision of Club employees is the responsibility of the General Manager. Any problems, issues or concerns regarding staff should be reported directly to the General Manager or in his/her absence to the Club President or the Club Vice President, Chair of the Personnel Committee. Under no circumstances should an employee be reprimanded by a Member or a Guest.

    The supervision of the General Manager is the responsibility of the Personnel Committee of the Board of Directors. Any problems, issues or concerns regarding the General Manager should be reported to the President or Vice President. Under no circumstances should the General Manager be reprimanded by a Member or a Guest.

  • No member, guest or visitor shall give a gratuity in any form to anyone in the service of the Club, with the exception of gratuities to staff for private events. Gratuities are included in the billing for the event and are distributed by the General Manager.

    Contributions to the Employees’ Annual Holiday Fund are collected each November and December and are distributed once a year in December.

    When the Club organizes a valet parking service, gratuities to the valet parkers are suggested.

  • No one under the age of 21 shall be served alcoholic beverages or be permitted at the bar.  Proof of age may be requested. The Club’s employees have been instructed to decline to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone whom they consider to be intoxicated.

    Transportation home will be made available to anyone requiring this service at the Member’s own expense.

  • All children under the age of eighteen must be accompanied by a Member of the Club.

  • Full details of the Club’s Gift Acceptance Policy are kept in the Office. In addition to monetary gifts, the Club may accept gifts of tangible personal property, such as artwork, that enhance the mission of the Club and its ambience. The Board of Directors will have final authority about the acceptance of any specific gift. All donated items become the property of the Garret Club and may be sold at fair market value as determined by an independent appraisal. The decision to sell a donated item will be made by the Board of Directors with guidance from the House Committee.

  • Any function, whether a club or private event, which would include solicitation or promotion for sale, is to be reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.

  • One of the benefits of membership is Club Activities. These activities include bridge, mah jongg, library, book club, croquet, art instruction and use of the Atelier. The Club welcomes member guests and encourages prospective members have an opportunity to experience the Club. For these activities, guest participation is limited to no more than six times a year. Please note: this does not include events (lectures, seminars, art luncheons, entertainment events, etc.) where there is a charge to participate.

  • Generally, guest speakers do not receive compensation. Any honorarium to a guest speaker is to be first reviewed and approved by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.

  • No article of any kind which is the property of the Club shall be rented, loaned, or removed from the Clubhouse except by authority of the Board of Directors. No furniture or cushions shall be removed from any room and placed in another room without the approval of the House Committee or the General Manager.

    No business papers or notebooks shall be in evidence on the first floor of the Club except in the Red Room and at scheduled meetings.

    Notices, subscription papers, petitions, advertisements, or placards which are not related to Club affairs shall neither be posted nor circulated on a bulletin board or elsewhere in the Clubhouse.

    No soliciting for any purpose, other than Club activities, shall be permitted on the premises, and no tickets or articles of any kind shall be sold or offered for sale unless for Club purposes. No tacks, nails, or screws may be used by any committee or any hostess for exhibition or decorations without permission from the General Manager in concurrence with the House Committee.

    No animals or pets, except as required by a visually impaired member or guest, shall be allowed in the Club.

  • All suggestions and complaints shall be made to the Chair of the House Committee.

  • The Club reserves the right to change any policies, procedures or House Rules at any time, with or without notice. Members will be notified of any such changes as soon as is possible.
